Stovetop espresso makers (also known as moka coffee pots) are a true European tradition, quickly brewing an extremely rich, full-flavored coffee on your stovetop. Moka pots are not percolators, but rather they force hot water under mild pressure up through the ground coffee and into the top carafe for serving. Coffee from stovetop pots generally tastes very similar to espresso brewed with electric pump machines; however, typically without much crema due to the lower brewing pressure.
Please note: Stovetop espresso pots are typically sized based on 1-1/2 oz. "cups" (approximate).
Simple, Traditional and Satisfying Moka Brewing
Stovetop espresso makers are simple to use and maintain, and models are available in both aluminum and stainless steel construction suitable for a variety of stove types and budgets. Following is a brief outline of the typical brewing process:
- Fill the base with water just up to the safety valve.
- Insert the funnel into the base & fill with medium ground coffee ("moka" grind for stovetop pots, an "espresso" grind is often too fine). Do not pack the coffee down, and be sure it is not heaped above the funnel rim.
- Securely screw the top carafe to the base & place the espresso pot on a compatible stove type using medium heat.
- Delicious moka coffee will soon begin flowing into the top carafe, as soon as the flow stops quickly remove from the stove and serve.
